No accounts needed. No apps to download. Just the tracking number gets you complete visibility into your shipment's journey across Canada or around the world.

Canada Post uses different formats depending on the service:
Domestic parcels from post offices: 16 numeric digits. Example: 5035144199183281
International shipments and prepaid items: 13 characters mixing letters and numbers, ending in "CA". Examples: LM123456789CA, CX987654321CA, RN456789012CA
Service-specific formats:
Priority Mail: Often starts with 9400 or has 20-22 digits. Xpresspost: Tracking numbers follow the 13-character format.
Registered Mail: Begins with RA, RB, RC, or RD followed by 9 digits and US (example: RA123456789US). Certified Mail: Starts with 9407 with 20 digits total
The system automatically recognizes formats, so you don't need to specify which service when tracking.
Finding your tracking number:
Retail receipt from the post office shows tracking numbers prominently. Shipping labels display them near barcodes. Email confirmations from online retailers include tracking info. Delivery notice cards (yellow cards in your mailbox) have tracking numbers if you missed delivery.
Common mistakes: confusing the letter "O" with zero, missing the final "CA" on domestic formats, or copying extra spaces. Double-check each character when entering.
Electronic information submitted by the shipper shows the sender created a shipping label, but physical scanning hasn't occurred. Wait for the first acceptance or processing scan to confirm Canada Post has the package.
Item processed indicates the parcel passed through sorting at a facility and is queued for its next movement.
In transit confirms Canada Post has physical possession and the package is moving through the network. Compare against the expected delivery date shown on tracking.
Item departed means the package left a facility or country. For overseas shipments, the next scan often shows customs or arrival in the destination nation.
Out for delivery is the good one - your parcel is loaded on a delivery vehicle heading to your address today. Be available if a signature is required.
A notice appears when the carrier couldn't complete delivery. Your package is available for pickup at the post office listed on the notice card or in tracking. Bring government ID and the notice card.
Available for pickup indicates your parcel has reached a post office and waits for collection. Visit with ID. You can authorize someone else with a signed card or letter if needed.
Delivered as a safe drop means the carrier left the package in a safe, sheltered location at your address when no signature or fees were required. Check the Canada Post app or tracking dashboard for photo confirmation of where they placed it.
The item held by customs shows that customs officials are reviewing your package. Timeframes vary by country and volume. Postal operators cannot speed this process during review.
Check delivery progress. Signals delivery was interrupted or returned. Open the delivery progress notes for specifics and follow any pickup or return guidance provided.
Delivered confirms final successful delivery with scan. If you can't find your package, check with household members, building concierge, parcel lockers, or neighbors before starting an investigation.
Gaps between scans happen commonly, especially for cross-border shipments or over weekends. Try these steps:
Verify you entered the tracking number correctly and check again after 24-48 hours. Look at the last facility scan to understand where progress paused. For international items, the package might be in transit between countries or sitting in customs with no scanning capability.
If the expected delivery date has passed with no updates, contact the sender to request an investigation with Canada Post. Only senders can officially open inquiries and file claims.
Delayed packages:
Review the latest scan and expected delivery date on tracking. Check for weather alerts, holidays, or peak season notices that might explain delays. International items need extra time for customs clearance. If nothing moved for several days past the expected date, ask the sender to request an investigation.
Missing packages:
Confirm the delivery address, including any unit or buzzer number. Search your property, parcel lockers, concierge, or mailroom. If tracking shows "Delivered" but you found nothing, report it and ask the sender to start a claim. Remember: only senders can file claims with Canada Post for compensation.
Damaged items arriving:
Refuse delivery if damage is severe. Photograph all damage before opening anything. File a claim through the sender - they own the claim process with Canada Post. Keep all packaging materials as evidence for the investigation.
To the United States:
Xpresspost USA: 2-3 business days to most major urban centers. Expedited Parcel USA: 4-7 business days, typically Small Packet: 5-8 business days on average
To other countries:
Xpresspost International: Commonly 4-7 business days for many destinations. Economy services: Small Packet and International Parcel by air often take 6-12 business days, while surface options can extend to several weeks
Customs review, peak periods, and severe weather unpredictably extend these windows.
This service specifically targets Canada-to-USA shipments, offering the fastest Canada Post option for American deliveries. Tracking comes standard, and projected arrival hits 2-3 business days to most U.S. states.
The unique aspect: U.S. Postal Service employees handle Xpresspost-USA items as domestic Priority Mail once they cross the border. This partnership speeds delivery compared to standard international processing.
If packages don't arrive on time, Canada Post provides replacement service or a credit equivalent to shipping charges - an on-time guarantee backing the service.
